What to do in Lucerne Valley
- Get the out-the-door total in writing, with every fee on its own line.
- Check that sales tax matches the rate where you'll register the car.
- California caps the dealer doc fee — ask for any add-on you didn't request to be removed.
- Compare at least two High Desert dealers on the same total.
How it actually works
Why the sticker is never the price you pay
An out-the-door total is a stack of separate layers: the selling price, then sales tax, then state registration fees, then the dealer's document fee, then anything the dealer adds. Each layer has its own rules, and only some of them are negotiable.
Sales tax scales directly with price, so every $1,000 you negotiate off the CX-5 also removes that $1,000's share of tax.
The trade-in myth almost everybody gets backwards
In many states a trade-in lowers the taxable amount. California doesn't work that way: tax is charged on the selling price of the Mazda CX-5 before your trade is subtracted. So a trade-in saves you money on the price, but not on the tax — budget for the full tax either way.
Where the real negotiating room lives
Tax and DMV fees are set by the state, and the doc fee is capped by California law. That leaves two layers that actually move: the selling price and the add-ons. Pre-installed extras like nitrogen tire fill, paint sealant or etched VINs are where padded totals usually hide — under California's CARS Act rules, optional add-ons can't be required, so each one should appear as its own line you can decline.

About the Mazda CX-5
The CX-5 competes with the RAV4 and CR-V for the compact-SUV buyer, and it generally wins on interior materials and driving feel. What it gives up is cargo volume — measurably less than either rival — so the decision comes down to whether you value the drive or the space more.
Who it fits
- Buyers who want the nicest-feeling interior in the class and don't need maximum cargo capacity.
- Commuters who value ride and handling more than an extra cubic foot of trunk space.
- Anyone cross-shopping a RAV4 or CR-V who's willing to trade some space for driving feel.
