Refrigerant leak
A/C is a sealed system. If it is low, it leaked — and a recharge without a leak search is a countdown, not a fix.

What this actually is
Air conditioning does not consume refrigerant. The same charge circulates for the life of the vehicle unless something lets it out. So when a shop tells you the system is low, the actual finding is that the system has a leak, and the only question is where.
In the Inland Empire and High Desert this is not a comfort issue, it is a usability issue. A car without A/C in Barstow in August is a car you cannot reasonably drive, and repeated recharges cost more over two summers than finding the leak once.
Refrigerant also carries the compressor's oil. A system that runs low starves the compressor of lubrication, which is how a $300 leak repair turns into a $1,400 compressor job.
This page explains one possible cause. It is not a diagnosis of your car — only a hands-on inspection can confirm what is wrong with yours.
Fix it when convenient
Nothing about a refrigerant leak endangers the car mechanically, but running the system very low damages the compressor. If the A/C has stopped cooling, switch it off until it is repaired rather than running it and hoping.
How it fails
- O-rings and seals hardening with heat and age, the most common leak point
- A condenser punctured by road debris — it sits at the very front of the car
- The evaporator core leaking inside the dash, which is the expensive one because the dash must come out
- A compressor shaft seal weeping, often visible as oily residue at the front of the compressor
- Schrader valves at the service ports, a cheap and frequently overlooked leak

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.
- Note how long the cold lasts after a recharge — days means a large leak, a full season means a small one
- Look for oily dirt accumulation at A/C line fittings and at the compressor nose
- Check whether the compressor clutch engages when you turn the A/C on; a system too low will lock it out on purpose
- Confirm the cabin air filter is not clogged, because weak airflow is a different problem entirely
The tests that actually prove it
Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.
- High and low side pressures read with gauges and shown to you
- A leak search with UV dye or an electronic sniffer, with the location identified specifically
- A vacuum hold test: the system pulled into vacuum should hold it for 30 minutes with no rise
- Refrigerant recovered and weighed on removal, which tells you exactly how much had leaked out

Repair costs vary by vehicle, location, labor rate, and parts. Treat every range as a starting point for a conversation, not a quote.
What to push back on
These are the quotes we see most often attached to this cause that the evidence did not support.
- A recharge with no leak search, sold twice to the same customer
- Sealant-in-a-can products — most A/C shops will refuse to service a system afterward, and some will not touch the car at all
- A compressor sold without a drier and flush, which voids most compressor warranties
- A dye test billed a second time when the dye from the first visit is still in the system

- Which part actually needs replacing, and why that one?
- Can you show me the failed component or the measurement?
- Was anything else damaged by this?

- Is any of this quote optional or recommended rather than required?
Questions people actually ask
- How long should an A/C recharge last?
- Forever, in a system with no leak. If a recharge lasted one summer, you have a small leak. If it lasted two weeks, you have a large one. Either way the answer is to find it.
- Are the DIY recharge cans from the parts store a bad idea?
- They overcharge systems easily, most contain sealant that contaminates shop equipment, and none of them address the leak. In an emergency they will get you through a weekend; as a strategy they cost more than they save.
- My car uses R-1234yf — why is it so much more expensive?
- R-1234yf is the newer, lower-global-warming refrigerant used on most 2015-and-later vehicles, and it costs several times what R-134a does per pound. That is a real cost difference, not a markup, though you should still see the weight charged on the invoice.
