Parasitic draw

Something on the car stays awake after you lock it and quietly empties the battery while you sleep.

What this actually is

Every modern car draws a small amount of current with the key out — alarm, keyless entry receiver, radio memory, telematics. Healthy is roughly 20 to 50 milliamps once the modules have gone to sleep, which takes anywhere from a few minutes to three quarters of an hour depending on the vehicle.

A parasitic draw is anything above that. A glovebox lamp that never goes out, an aftermarket stereo or dash cam wired to constant power, a door switch that thinks a door is open, or a module that never sleeps because a network message keeps waking it. At 500 milliamps a typical battery is dead in about two days; at 2 amps it is dead overnight.

The tell is simple: the car starts perfectly when driven daily, and fails after it sits.

Not dangerous, but every deep discharge permanently costs the battery capacity. Two or three flat mornings will finish off a battery that would otherwise have lasted another two years.

How it fails

  • Aftermarket accessories — remote start, alarms, stereos, dash cams — tapped into constant power
  • A lamp switch stuck on in the trunk, glovebox or a door jamb
  • A body control or telematics module that will not enter sleep mode
  • A shorted diode inside the alternator, which drains backwards through the charging circuit

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Open the trunk and glovebox and confirm the lamps go out when you close them by hand
  • Note whether the problem started right after an accessory was installed — that is your answer most of the time
  • Check whether the car survives two days unplugged from any aftermarket device
  • Confirm the battery itself is good first; an old battery imitates a draw perfectly

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • A milliamp draw test with the meter in series, taken after the modules have fully gone to sleep, not immediately after closing the door
  • The measured number written down — you should be told the actual draw in milliamps, not just 'we found a drain'
  • Fuse-by-fuse isolation, or a voltage drop test across each fuse, to name the circuit
  • A retest after the repair proving the draw is back under spec

Questions people actually ask

How long should a car sit before the battery goes flat?
A healthy car with a healthy battery should start after two to three weeks parked. If yours will not start after two or three days, you either have a draw or a battery that has lost most of its capacity.
Can a dash cam kill my battery?
Yes, easily. Parking mode records with the car off. Unless it is wired through a hardwire kit with a voltage cutoff, it will keep pulling until the battery cannot start the engine.
Why do shops charge so much to find a drain?
Because it is measured, isolated bench work rather than a part swap. The technician has to keep the circuit intact, wait for the car to sleep, then pull fuses one at a time. An hour or two is honest; a guess is not.
