Power windows or door locks stopped working
Whether one window is dead or all of them are is the entire diagnosis. Those are two different repairs with very different price tags.

A comfort and security issue rather than a safety one. Get a window stuck down secured before the car is left outside, and avoid slamming a door with glass loose inside it.
Severity here reflects the typical case for this symptom. Your car may be worse than typical — when in doubt, treat it as the more serious option.
Possible causes
Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.
What the pattern tells you
- One window dead from both its own switch and the master switch: the window motor or regulator in that door, or the wiring to it.
- One window works from the master switch but not its own door switch: that door's switch is bad.
- All windows dead at once: a fuse, a relay, the master switch, or the body control module.
- Window moves slowly, stops partway, or drops with a bang: a failing regulator — often the cable or scissor mechanism rather than the motor.
- Window and lock and speaker on the same door all dead: broken wires in the rubber boot between the door and the body.
- Locks cycle by themselves or only one lock actuator fails: a failing actuator, or moisture in the door affecting the switch.
- Everything electrical is odd and the battery is weak: fix the battery first — low voltage produces bizarre accessory behavior.
What it usually is
For a single dead window, the window regulator is the most common failure. The regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the glass; on many vehicles it uses a thin cable that frays and eventually snaps, at which point the glass drops into the door. The motor itself is often fine, but the two are frequently sold as one assembly, which is why the quote may name both.
For all windows dead, start at the fuse and the master switch. The driver's master switch carries the current for every window on many vehicles and is the single most-used switch in the car, so it wears out. A blown fuse points at something drawing too much — often a binding regulator that has been forcing the motor.
When a door's window, lock and speaker all quit together, look at the wiring harness in the flexible rubber boot at the door hinge. Those wires bend thousands of times over a car's life and eventually break inside the insulation where nothing is visible. This is a common failure and a fair repair to ask a shop to look for specifically before they open the whole door panel.
Door lock actuators fail on their own too, usually announced by a weak or clicking sound rather than silence. On High Desert cars, heat cycling and dust make both switch contacts and actuators wear faster than average.
And before anything: a weak battery makes accessories misbehave in ways that look like a dozen separate faults. If the car also cranks slowly or the headlights sag, get the battery tested first — that one test can dissolve the entire problem list.
What it probably isn't
Useful exclusions, so you are not talked into the expensive answer first.
What it rarely is
It is rarely the body control module, though it is an expensive thing to be quoted. Module failures usually affect more than the windows and typically set diagnostic codes. Ask what code or test points at the module before approving one.
It is rarely the glass or the seals, even when the window binds. Binding is normally the regulator or a track that has come out of its guide.
It is rarely worth replacing a working motor to fix a broken cable — but many suppliers only sell the regulator and motor together, so ask whether a regulator-only part exists for your vehicle.
What you can check
Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.
- Write down exactly when it happens: cold or warm, idling or moving, speed, and whether braking or turning changes it.
- Check tire pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb, on all four tires.
- With the engine off and cool, look at the oil and coolant levels using the dipstick and the reservoir markings only.
- Look under the car for fresh drips and note the color and where the puddle sits.
- Look at the battery terminals for corrosion or a loose clamp — no tools needed to spot it.
- Take a photo or a short video of the part, the puddle, the warning light or the estimate and send it through Photo Check.
What a shop should check
Ask for these before you approve any work. A shop that cannot answer them is guessing with your money.

- Did you test for voltage at the motor connector when the switch is pressed, in both directions?
- Is the failure the switch, the motor, the regulator mechanism, or the wiring in the door jamb — and which test told you that?
- Is a regulator-only part available for this vehicle, or does it come as a regulator and motor assembly?
- Is the glass still in its track, and is any of it damaged?
- If a fuse blew, what caused the overload — replacing the fuse alone is not a repair.
- What is the labor time for this door specifically, and does it include reinstalling the vapor barrier correctly?

Read this out or text it over. Describing the pattern instead of naming a part is what keeps a diagnosis honest.

What the fix typically runs
A fuse is a couple of dollars. A door switch is inexpensive with modest labor. A window regulator and motor assembly is the most common real repair and sits in the low-to-mid range for parts, with about an hour or two of labor to remove and reinstall the door panel. A lock actuator is similar. Repairing broken wires in the door jamb boot is mostly labor and varies with how many conductors have failed.
One thing worth insisting on: when the door panel goes back together, the plastic vapor barrier behind it must be resealed. Skipping that lets water into the door and the cabin, and the resulting smell or electrical fault six months later is far more expensive than the original job.
If you are quoted a body control module for a single dead window, get a second opinion. That is the pattern where a second set of eyes on the estimate most often saves real money.

Stop driving and get professional help if any of these are true
- The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or you see steam or coolant on the ground.
- You smell burning, fuel, or hot oil, or you see smoke from anywhere on the car.
- The brake pedal sinks toward the floor, feels spongy, or the car pulls hard while braking.
- The steering feels loose, wanders, or the car does not track straight.
- A warning light flashes rather than staying steady, or the oil pressure or brake light comes on.
- The car loses power, stalls in traffic, or the battery light comes on while driving.
Is it safe to drive?
This is a comfort and security problem, not a safety one, with two exceptions. A window stuck in the down position in summer leaves the interior exposed to heat and the car exposed to theft — get it up and secured even temporarily. And a window that will not go down at all means the driver cannot reach a parking ticket machine or, more importantly, cannot get out through the window in an emergency where the door is jammed.
If the glass has dropped inside the door, avoid slamming that door. The loose glass can shift and crack, which turns a regulator job into a regulator plus glass job.

- My key fob locks the doors but the switch inside does not. What is that?
- That points at the interior lock switch or its wiring rather than the actuators, since the actuators clearly work when commanded by the fob. It is one of the cheaper outcomes.
