Monthly payment
Car payment calculator (California)
Most payment calculators quietly leave out tax and fees, which is why the number at the dealership is always higher than the one you ran at home. This one includes them, and it shows the total interest so you can see what a longer term really costs.

Fill in every line and hit calculate. We don't pre-fill numbers, because a payment built on someone else's guesses isn't worth anything at the desk.
What this calculator includes that others skip
- California sales tax applied to the vehicle price, at the rate for your district. Rates in San Bernardino and Riverside counties commonly land near 7.75% to 9%, so check your city's rate.
- Registration, title and doc fees, which are real money financed at your APR.
- Trade equity, and negative equity when your payoff is higher than the offer.
- Total interest across the term, which is the number that shows why 84 months is expensive.
The California trade-in detail
In many states a trade-in reduces the amount you pay tax on. California does not work that way — sales tax is calculated on the vehicle's selling price regardless of your trade. If a calculator or a salesperson tells you your trade lowers your tax, the math is wrong.
How to use the output
- Negotiate the out-the-door price first, then plug it in. Never negotiate from a monthly payment.
- Compare the same price at 60, 72 and 84 months. The payment drops and the total interest climbs, often by thousands.
- If the payment only works at 84 months, that is a signal the vehicle is too expensive, not that the term is too short.
- Bring a preapproval from your bank or credit union, then let the dealer try to beat that rate.
What this is not
It is an estimate, not a quote. Your actual APR depends on credit, the lender and the vehicle. Fees vary by dealer within the limits California sets. Use it to sanity-check a deal, and send us the worksheet if something looks off.
The short version
Include tax and fees or your estimate will always be low. Compare terms side by side, and negotiate the out-the-door price before anyone mentions a monthly payment.
Common questions
- Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in California?
- No. California calculates sales tax on the vehicle's selling price, and a trade-in allowance does not reduce the taxable amount. Your trade lowers what you finance, not what you are taxed on.
- What sales tax rate should I use?
- Use the rate for the city where the vehicle will be registered, not the dealer's city. Inland Empire and High Desert rates commonly run between about 7.75% and 9%.
- Is 84 months ever a good idea?
- Rarely. It lowers the payment but adds a lot of interest and keeps you underwater on the loan far longer, which makes your next trade painful. If you need 84 months to qualify, look at a less expensive vehicle.
