Worn brake pads or rotors

Normal wear that squeals as a designed warning and grinds once the friction material is gone.

What this actually is

Brake pads are consumable. They start around 10 to 12 millimeters of friction material and wear down as you drive. Most manufacturers consider 3 millimeters the replacement point, and most pads include a small metal tab that contacts the rotor around that thickness — that is the squeal. It is designed to be annoying so you act before it grinds.

Rotors wear too, and they have a stamped minimum thickness on the hub or edge. Once a rotor is below spec, it cannot absorb heat properly, it warps, and it is not safe to resurface.

Life depends far more on how you drive than on the parts. A car doing the Cajon Pass daily eats brakes at two or three times the rate of the same car doing city miles in Riverside, because gravity does the accelerating and the brakes do all the slowing.

How it fails

  • Friction material worn to the wear indicator, producing a high-pitched squeal when not braking hard
  • Material worn away completely, leaving the backing plate to grind metal on metal
  • Rotors worn below the stamped minimum thickness, or grooved deeply by a gone-through pad
  • Uneven wear between the inner and outer pad, which points at a sticking caliper slide pin
  • Glazed pads from sustained heat, which reduce bite and increase stopping distance

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Look through the wheel spokes at the outer pad — you can often see remaining thickness against the rotor
  • Run a fingertip across the rotor face; deep grooves you can catch a nail in mean rotors are involved
  • Note whether the squeal appears while driving and stops when you brake — that is the wear indicator, not a fault
  • Compare the wheels for brake dust; one wheel far dirtier than the other suggests a dragging caliper

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • Pad thickness in millimeters, at all four corners, written on the invoice
  • Rotor thickness measured with a micrometer against the stamped minimum spec
  • A caliper slide pin inspection, especially if inner and outer pads differ
  • A brake fluid moisture test, which costs nothing and tells you if the fluid is due

What to push back on

Questions people actually ask

How many miles should brake pads last?
Anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles. City stop-and-go and mountain grades sit at the low end; steady freeway commuting sits at the high end. Mileage is a poor predictor — the millimeter measurement is the only real answer.
Do rotors always need replacing with pads?
No. If the rotors measure above minimum thickness and the surface is smooth, new pads on existing rotors is correct. Many shops replace them by default because it is faster and eliminates comeback noise, but you are entitled to the measurement first.
Is squealing always worn pads?
Not always. Light morning squeal that clears after a stop or two is usually surface rust burning off. A consistent high-pitched squeal that appears while driving and stops when you press the pedal is the wear indicator doing exactly what it was designed to do.
