Sticking caliper or dragging brake
One brake never fully releases, which heats a wheel, pulls the car, kills fuel economy and smells hot after a drive.

What this actually is
When you lift off the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure drops and the caliper should relax, letting the pad float a fraction of a millimeter off the rotor. A dragging brake never gets there. The pad stays lightly clamped, generating heat continuously, which is why the wheel is too hot to touch after a drive and why the car smells like something is burning.
It rarely feels dramatic. Most people notice fuel economy dropping, a slight pull to one side, or that one wheel is coated in far more brake dust than the others. Left alone, the heat destroys the pad, warps the rotor, boils the fluid at that corner and can cook a wheel bearing.
In desert heat the margin is thinner. A caliper that drags acceptably in coastal weather runs hot enough in Barstow in July to fade the brakes on a downgrade.

Drive it to a shop, not on a road trip. A dragging brake can boil its own fluid on a long descent, and a boiled circuit gives you a pedal that goes to the floor exactly when you need it most.
How it fails
- Corroded or dry caliper slide pins that stop the caliper from floating back
- A seized caliper piston, usually from a torn dust boot letting moisture in
- A collapsed flexible brake hose acting as a one-way valve, holding pressure at that wheel
- A parking brake cable rusted in the applied position, common on rear drums and integrated rear calipers
- A brake pad seized in its bracket by rust or debris

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.
- After a 15-minute drive, hold your hand near (not on) each wheel — one dramatically hotter than the rest is your corner
- Look for one wheel coated in far more brake dust than the others
- Note whether the pull worsens the longer you drive, which is characteristic of drag rather than alignment
- Listen for a constant light scraping that does not change when you brake
The tests that actually prove it
Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.
- An infrared temperature reading at each wheel after a road test, with the numbers given to you
- A wheel spin test on a lift, comparing rolling resistance side to side
- Slide pin condition inspected and shown to you
- A hose test: if pressure releases only after cracking the bleeder, the flexible hose is collapsed internally

- Why does a dragging brake pull the car?
- Because one wheel is being slowed continuously while the others are not. The car steers toward the side that is being held back, and the effect gets stronger as that brake heats up.
- Can a dragging brake hurt my fuel economy?
- Noticeably. A properly seized caliper can cost several miles per gallon, because the engine is fighting a brake the entire time you drive.
- Is a hot wheel always a problem?
- All wheels get warm after braking. The test is comparison: if one is markedly hotter than the wheel on the other side of the same axle after the same drive, that corner is dragging.
