Low coolant or stuck thermostat

The heater runs on engine coolant, so it goes cold first when the level drops or the engine never fully warms.

What this actually is

Your heater is a small radiator behind the dash that the engine's coolant flows through. Because the heater core sits high in the system, it is the first thing to lose flow when the coolant level drops — which is why cold air from the vents is often the earliest warning of a coolant leak, arriving before the temperature gauge ever moves.

A thermostat stuck open causes the opposite pattern: the engine never reaches full operating temperature, so there is no heat to give. The temperature gauge sitting below normal, plus lukewarm air, plus slightly worse fuel economy, is that signature.

In this climate the heater gets ignored for eight months of the year, which means a slow coolant leak can develop all summer and only announce itself the first cold morning in Wrightwood or Big Bear.

  • A slow external leak at a hose, radiator seam, water pump or heater hose fitting
  • A thermostat stuck open, so the engine never reaches operating temperature
  • A thermostat stuck closed, which overheats rather than under-heats
  • Air trapped in the cooling system after a service that was not properly bled
  • A clogged heater core, often on a system run with plain water or mismatched coolant
  • A head gasket pushing combustion gas into the coolant, which creates an air pocket that keeps returning

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Check the coolant reservoir level with the engine cold and note whether it is below the minimum mark
  • Watch the temperature gauge: never reaching the middle points at a thermostat stuck open
  • Feel both heater hoses at the firewall with the engine warm — both should be hot; one hot and one cold suggests a clogged core
  • Note whether you have been topping the coolant off, because a system that consumes coolant is leaking somewhere

  • A cooling system pressure test that either holds or reveals the leak location
  • Thermostat operation verified by temperature readings at the hoses and the gauge
  • A combustion gas test on the coolant if the level keeps dropping with no external leak found
  • A proper vacuum fill and bleed after any coolant work, which prevents the air pocket that causes this in the first place

Questions people actually ask

Why is my heater cold but the engine is not overheating?
Because the heater core sits at the high point of the cooling system. It loses coolant flow first, so cold air often appears well before the temperature gauge reacts. Treat it as an early warning and check the level.
Can a stuck thermostat cause both problems?
Different failures, opposite results. Stuck open means the engine runs cool and the heater is weak. Stuck closed means coolant cannot reach the radiator and the engine overheats quickly.
Is air in the cooling system a real thing?
Very much so. An air pocket after a coolant service will give you cold air from the vents, an erratic temperature gauge, and sometimes gurgling behind the dash. A proper vacuum fill removes it, and a good shop does that as standard.
