Car overheating: what to do and what it costs

Heat is the one problem that can turn a cheap part into a new engine in about a mile. Here is the order of operations.

An overheating engine is the fastest way to convert a modest repair into a catastrophic one. Everything in this article is secondary to one rule: when the gauge goes into the red, stop driving.

Heat damage happens in minutes. Pull over safely, shut it off, and do not open a hot cooling system. Continuing to drive risks a head gasket or a scrapped engine.

Severity here reflects the typical case for this symptom. Your car may be worse than typical — when in doubt, treat it as the more serious option.

Possible causes

Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.

Common causes

  • Low coolant from a leaking hose, radiator, water pump or thermostat housing.
  • A stuck thermostat, which is a relatively cheap part in a not-always-cheap location.
  • A failed cooling fan, which shows up in traffic rather than on the freeway.
  • A water pump on its way out, often with a whine or a weep at the pulley.
  • A radiator packed with dust, bugs or debris, which is more common here than people expect.
  • A head gasket failure, which is the expensive answer and usually arrives with white exhaust smoke or bubbles in the coolant reservoir.

What you can check

Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.

What to do in the moment

  • Turn off the AC and turn the heater on full. It sounds miserable in August, but the heater core pulls real heat out of the engine.
  • Pull over safely and shut the engine off. Idling does not cool an engine that has lost coolant.
  • Do not open the radiator cap on a hot engine. Pressurized coolant will burn you.
  • If the temperature drops back to normal after cooling and you can see no leak, drive directly to a shop. If it climbs again, call for a tow.

  • Where is the leak, and can you show me?
  • Did you test for combustion gases in the coolant to rule out a head gasket?
  • Is the fan operating on both speeds?

My car overheats [in traffic / on grades / all the time]. Can you pressure test the cooling system, check the thermostat, water pump, radiator and cooling fan operation, and check for combustion gases in the coolant?

  • What did you find, and what test confirmed it?
  • Is this a safety item, or can it wait?
  • What happens if I wait a month?
  • Which part actually needs replacing, and why that one?
  • Can you show me the failed component or the measurement?

How the bills split

Hoses, a thermostat, a cap or a fan relay sit at the low end. A radiator or water pump is a mid-range job depending on access. A head gasket is a major repair, and on a high-mileage vehicle it is often the point where you should be comparing the repair against the car's value rather than automatically approving it.

When to stop driving

Stop driving and get professional help if any of these are true

  • The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or you see steam or coolant on the ground.
  • You smell burning, fuel, or hot oil, or you see smoke from anywhere on the car.
  • The brake pedal sinks toward the floor, feels spongy, or the car pulls hard while braking.
  • The steering feels loose, wanders, or the car does not track straight.
  • A warning light flashes rather than staying steady, or the oil pressure or brake light comes on.
  • The car loses power, stalls in traffic, or the battery light comes on while driving.

Why this region is harder on cooling systems

Ambient heat is only part of it. Sustained climbs like the Cajon Pass on the 15, or long grades on the 210 and 60 with a full car, ask the cooling system for maximum output for twenty minutes at a time. A system that is marginal in March will show itself on a July grade.

Towing multiplies all of it. If you tow, the cooling system, transmission fluid temperature and brake condition all deserve attention before a trip rather than after.

Heater on, engine off, do not open the cap hot. Most overheating traces to coolant loss, a thermostat or a fan. If a shop is talking head gasket, get the combustion gas test and a second opinion before you spend engine money on an older car.

Common questions

Can I just add water and keep going?
Water will get you off the shoulder in an emergency, but it lowers the boiling point and offers no corrosion protection. Get the correct coolant mix in as soon as you can, and find the leak.
My temperature gauge is normal but the AC is warm. Related?
Often yes. A failed cooling fan affects both the radiator and the AC condenser, so warm air at idle plus a creeping temperature gauge in traffic is a classic fan symptom.
Is it worth fixing a head gasket?
It depends entirely on the car's value, its remaining life and whether the engine was overheated badly before it was shut off. Get the repair quote and the trade-in value side by side before deciding.
