Cooling system failure

A thermostat, water pump, radiator or fan that can no longer shed heat as fast as the engine makes it.

What this actually is

The cooling system is a loop with four jobs: circulate coolant (water pump), regulate temperature (thermostat), dump heat to the air (radiator), and move air through the radiator when the car is not (cooling fan). Overheating means one of those four stopped doing its job — and when it happens tells you which.

Overheating in stop-and-go traffic on Foothill Boulevard but fine at freeway speed points at the fan or airflow. Overheating on a grade like the Cajon Pass but fine in town points at capacity: a clogged radiator, a weak pump, or coolant that has lost its heat transfer. Overheating all the time points at the thermostat or a low coolant level.

Ambient temperature is not the cause. A healthy cooling system holds temperature at 115 degrees in Barstow. If your car only overheats in summer, it was already marginal.

Stop driving / urgent

Overheating is the fastest way to destroy an engine. A warped head or a cracked block can happen in a couple of miles. If the gauge climbs into the red, shut it off and let it cool — a tow is far cheaper than a head gasket.

How it fails

  • A thermostat stuck closed, which overheats fast and consistently from a cold start
  • A water pump with a failed impeller or a leaking seal, which circulates less coolant than it should
  • A radiator clogged internally with scale or externally with debris and bugs
  • A cooling fan or fan clutch that no longer pulls air at idle
  • A collapsed lower hose, failing radiator cap, or coolant that was topped with water and lost its boiling point
  • Combustion gases pushed into the coolant by a failing head gasket, which pressurizes the system

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Check coolant level at the reservoir when the engine is cold — never open a hot system
  • Look at the coolant color: rusty, oily or milky is a finding worth photographing
  • With the engine warm and the A/C on, confirm the cooling fan spins
  • Note the pattern — traffic only, grades only, or always — and tell the shop, because it narrows the cause enormously

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • A cooling system pressure test that holds pressure and locates any leak
  • Thermostat verification: both radiator hoses should get hot within a few minutes of the gauge reaching operating temperature
  • Fan operation confirmed at idle with A/C on, and fan clutch checked on trucks
  • A combustion gas (block) test on the coolant if there is any overheating with no visible leak
  • An infrared temperature scan across the radiator to find cold spots from internal clogging

Questions people actually ask

Can I drive a short distance if it is overheating?
Every mile risks a repair that costs more than the car. If the gauge is in the red or you see steam, pull over, shut it off, and let it cool for at least half an hour before you even open the hood. Running the heater at full blast can buy you a mile or two in an emergency.
Why does mine only overheat in traffic?
At speed, air is forced through the radiator whether the fan works or not. In traffic, the fan is the only thing moving air. Overheating that appears only when you stop moving is a fan or airflow problem until proven otherwise.
Is it safe to just add water?
In a roadside emergency, yes. As a habit, no. Water boils at a lower temperature than the correct coolant mix and offers no corrosion protection, which slowly ruins the water pump, heater core and radiator from the inside.
