TPMS sensor or slow leak

A dead sensor battery, a nail in the tread, or desert temperature swings pushing a tire below the warning threshold.

What this actually is

Tire pressure monitoring warns you at roughly 25 percent below the placard pressure. Direct systems use a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel; indirect systems infer pressure from wheel speed differences and have no sensors at all. Which one you have changes the repair entirely.

In the High Desert, temperature does a lot of the work. Pressure changes about 1 psi for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit, and a 40-degree overnight swing between a Victorville night and a Victorville afternoon is routine. A tire set to exactly placard pressure on a hot afternoon will trip the light the next cold morning without anything being wrong.

But a light that returns within days after being reset, on the same tire, is a leak. Air does not disappear.

The light itself is not dangerous, but a chronically underinflated tire runs hot, and heat is what destroys tires. In summer, on the freeway, an underinflated tire is the setup for a blowout.

How it fails

  • A slow puncture from a nail or screw, losing a few psi per week
  • A corroded valve stem, especially aluminum stems in a road-salt-free but dusty environment
  • A TPMS sensor battery reaching end of life at seven to ten years
  • A sensor damaged during tire mounting
  • A wheel bead leak where the tire meets a corroded or dirty rim
  • Sensors not relearned to the vehicle after a tire rotation or wheel swap

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Buy a $10 gauge and check all four tires cold, before driving, against the door jamb placard
  • Air everything to placard and note which tire has dropped a week later
  • Look and feel across the tread for a nail head
  • Spray soapy water around the valve stem and the wheel bead and look for bubbles

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • Cold pressures in psi for all four tires, given to you as numbers
  • A sensor scan tool reading showing each sensor's ID, battery status and reported pressure
  • A dunk or soap test on the suspect tire to find an actual leak
  • Confirmation of whether your car uses direct sensors or indirect monitoring before anyone quotes sensors

Why does the light come on cold mornings and go off later?
Pressure drops roughly 1 psi per 10-degree temperature drop. A tire near the warning threshold on a warm afternoon dips below it overnight and comes back above it once driving warms the tire. Set your pressures cold, slightly above placard, and the pattern usually stops.
How long do TPMS sensors last?
Seven to ten years, limited by a sealed internal battery that cannot be replaced. If your car is a decade old and sensors start failing one at a time, replacing the set during a tire change is the economical move.
Can I ignore the light?
No. Even if it is nagging you about a small deviation today, it is the only warning you get for a real leak tomorrow. Confirm pressures with a gauge and fix the underlying cause.
