Alignment and tire pressure
Uneven pressure or a wheel pointing slightly off pulls the car and wears one edge of a tire early.

What this actually is
Alignment is three angles. Toe is whether the wheels point straight ahead or slightly in or out — the biggest cause of rapid tire wear. Camber is how far the top of the wheel leans in or out, which wears one edge. Caster affects steering feel and straight-line stability, and unequal caster side to side pulls the car.
It is also the most oversold service in the industry, because a pull has several possible causes and alignment is the one that gets sold. Before an alignment is the answer, tire pressures should be equalized, a tire should be ruled out by cross-rotating, and a dragging brake should be ruled out by comparing wheel temperatures.
Potholes are what actually knock alignment out, and Inland Empire and High Desert surface streets supply plenty. A hard hit, a curb strike, or new suspension parts are all legitimate reasons to align.

Fix it when convenient
Misalignment is not a safety failure, but it destroys tires quickly — a badly out toe angle can ruin a set in a few thousand miles. Fix it before you buy new tires, not after.
How it fails
- Toe knocked out by a pothole or curb strike
- Camber changed by worn suspension components, which must be replaced before aligning
- Unequal tire pressures, which imitate an alignment pull exactly and cost nothing to correct
- Road crown pushing the car gently right — normal, not a fault
- Ride height changes from sagging springs or a lift kit, which shift every angle at once

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.
- Set all four tires to the pressure on the door jamb sticker when cold, then re-test the pull
- Look at the tire wear pattern: inner edge wear points at camber or toe, both edges points at underinflation, center wear points at overinflation
- Note whether the pull worsens as you drive, which points at a dragging brake instead
- Check whether the steering wheel is off-center when driving straight, a classic toe symptom

Questions people actually ask
- How often do I need an alignment?
- There is no fixed interval. Align when the car pulls, when the steering wheel is off-center, when tires wear unevenly, after suspension work, or after a hard impact. Otherwise you are buying a service the car does not need.
- Can bad alignment cause vibration?
- Not directly. Alignment causes pulling, wandering and uneven wear. Vibration is almost always balance, a damaged tire, or a brake or driveline component.
- My car pulls slightly right — is that normal?
- A very gentle drift right on a crowned road is normal because the road is built to shed water. A pull you have to correct with steady steering pressure is not.
