Buying a Chevrolet Equinox near San Diego? Ask every dealer for one written out-the-door total, then compare totals — not monthly payments.

What to do in San Diego

  1. Get the out-the-door total in writing, with every fee on its own line.
  2. Check the sales tax: San Diego is 7.75% (about $775 per $10,000 of price), based on where you register the car.
  3. California caps the dealer doc fee — ask for any add-on you didn't request to be removed.
  4. Compare at least two San Diego dealers on the same total.

How it actually works

Why the sticker is never the price you pay

An out-the-door total is a stack of separate layers: the selling price, then sales tax, then state registration fees, then the dealer's document fee, then anything the dealer adds. Each layer has its own rules, and only some of them are negotiable.

Here's the tax layer in San Diego, using a round illustrative selling price of $30,000: at 7.75%, tax is about $232,500. That number scales directly with price — every $1,000 you negotiate off the Equinox also removes about $7,750 of tax.

The trade-in myth almost everybody gets backwards

In many states a trade-in lowers the taxable amount. California doesn't work that way: tax is charged on the selling price of the Chevrolet Equinox before your trade is subtracted. So a trade-in saves you money on the price, but not on the tax — budget for the full tax either way.

Where the real negotiating room lives

Tax and DMV fees are set by the state, and the doc fee is capped by California law. That leaves two layers that actually move: the selling price and the add-ons. Pre-installed extras like nitrogen tire fill, paint sealant or etched VINs are where padded totals usually hide — under California's CARS Act rules, optional add-ons can't be required, so each one should appear as its own line you can decline.

About the Chevrolet Equinox

The Equinox is Chevrolet's compact SUV, built for commuting and everyday errands rather than towing or off-road use, and it's a reasonable pick for buyers who got talked into shopping something larger than they need.

Who it fits

  • Commuters and small families who want SUV seating height without truck size, cost or fuel use.
  • Buyers cross-shopping the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and GMC Terrain.
  • Not a fit for anyone who needs real towing or hauling capability — that's the Colorado or Silverado's job.
