A gentle pull is usually alignment or tire pressure. A pull that appears only while braking is a brake fault and should be inspected right away.
Severity here reflects the typical case for this symptom. Your car may be worse than typical — when in doubt, treat it as the more serious option.
Possible causes
Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.
Three different symptoms
- Steady pull while driving straight: uneven tire pressure, an alignment out of spec, or a tire with internal pull. Swap the front tires side to side. If the pull switches direction, the tire is the cause.
- Pull that only appears when you brake: a sticking caliper or a collapsed brake hose on one side.
- Steering wheel off-center but the car tracks straight: alignment, and specifically the toe setting.
- Wandering rather than pulling: worn tie rods, ball joints or a loose steering rack, which is a safety inspection rather than an alignment.
Walking through the likely causes
Uneven tire pressure is first because it is free to rule out and it accounts for a surprising number of pulls. A few pounds of difference across an axle changes the rolling radius enough to steer the car. Desert overnight-to-afternoon temperature swings are large enough to create that difference on their own.
Second is tire conicity — a pull built into the tire itself by how the belts were laid. It is not a defect you can see. The test is to swap the two front tires side to side: if the pull changes direction, you found it, and no alignment will cure it.
Third is alignment, specifically camber and caster differences between the left and right front wheels. Toe being off does not usually pull, it wears tires and leaves the steering wheel crooked while the car tracks straight. A printout with the before and after numbers is how you tell which of those you actually had.
Fourth is a brake that drags on one side. A caliper with seized slide pins, a stuck piston, or a brake hose that has collapsed internally keeps one wheel partly braked. The signature is a pull that only appears when you press the pedal, often with a hot wheel and a faint burning smell after the drive.
Fifth is worn steering and suspension parts. Ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings or a loose steering rack let the geometry move under load, so the car wanders and darts rather than pulling steadily. A good shop refuses to align a car in that condition because the settings will not hold.
Last, and worth ruling out before spending anything, is the road. Most highways are crowned to drain water, so a mild drift to the right on the outside lane is normal. Test on a flat, level surface, in both directions, before you assume a fault.
What you can check
Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.
The free thing to check first
Set all four tires to the pressure on the door jamb placard, cold, then drive again. Heat swings here are large enough that a car can lose meaningful pressure overnight in winter and gain it back in the afternoon, and a few pounds of difference across an axle produces a real pull.
Also note that a mild drift to the right on a crowned road is normal. Test on a flat, level surface before assuming a fault.

What alignment does and does not fix
An alignment corrects the angles of the wheels. It cures uneven wear, off-center steering wheels and many steady pulls. It does not fix a brake pull, a bad tire, a bent wheel or worn suspension joints, and a good shop will refuse to align a car with worn joints because the settings will not hold.
