Vacuum or intake leak
Air sneaks into the engine after the sensor that measures it, so the computer's fuel math is wrong — worst at idle.

What this actually is
The engine computer decides how much fuel to inject based on how much air it thinks entered. A vacuum leak lets extra air in downstream of the mass airflow sensor, so the real mixture is leaner than the computer believes. At idle, when total airflow is small, a small leak is a large percentage error — which is why the engine shakes at a stoplight and smooths out on the freeway.
In High Desert heat, rubber does not last. Vacuum hoses harden, PCV lines split at the elbows, and intake manifold gaskets shrink. Cars that live outside in Victorville or Apple Valley see this years earlier than the same model in a mild climate.
The classic code set is P0171 or P0174 — system too lean — with positive fuel trims that are large at idle and shrink at higher rpm.

Fix it when convenient
A vacuum leak is an economy and drivability problem, not a safety one. It is worth fixing before it triggers a lean misfire and takes the catalytic converter with it, but you are not in danger driving on it.
How it fails
- Cracked or hardened vacuum and PCV hoses, especially at bends and connectors
- An intake manifold gasket that has shrunk or warped with heat cycles
- A split intake boot between the airflow sensor and the throttle body
- A brake booster or its check valve leaking, which also makes the pedal feel hard
- A leaking injector seal or a stuck-open purge valve feeding air in from the evap system

- Listen at idle with the hood up for a hiss that changes when you cover a hose end
- Squeeze accessible vacuum hoses — hardened, crunchy rubber has already failed or will shortly
- Look for cracks in the accordion intake boot by flexing it gently by hand
- Note whether the idle smooths out when you rev slightly; that pattern strongly favors a leak
The tests that actually prove it
Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.
- A smoke test of the intake with the results shown to you — this is the definitive test and takes minutes
- Fuel trim readings at idle and at 2,500 rpm, so the shop can prove the error shrinks with rpm
- A visual inspection of the intake boot, PCV system and brake booster hose
- Verification that the mass airflow sensor reads plausibly before it gets blamed

Questions people actually ask
- Can a vacuum leak cause a check engine light?
- Yes, most commonly P0171 or P0174 for a lean system, and often a rough-idle or misfire code alongside it. The lean code is the symptom; the leak is the cause.
- Why does the shaking stop when I drive?
- At idle the engine only pulls a small amount of air, so a leak is a big percentage of the total and the mixture goes badly wrong. At speed the engine moves far more air and the same leak becomes a rounding error.
- Is carb cleaner spray a valid test?
- It can find a large leak, but it is a fire risk on a hot engine and it misses small leaks and leaks in awkward spots. A smoke test is safer, faster and finds things spray never will.
