Rich running fuel mixture

The engine burns more fuel than it can use — black smoke, poor economy, and a catalytic converter on borrowed time.

What this actually is

The engine aims for roughly 14.7 parts air to one part fuel. Running rich means too much fuel for the air available. The excess does not burn in the cylinder; it burns in the exhaust, which is where the catalytic converter lives. That is why a rich condition left alone eventually turns into a converter replacement several times the cost of the original fault.

Fuel trim readings are the honest diagnostic. They show how far the computer is having to correct from its base calculation. Large negative trims mean the computer is pulling fuel back because something is adding too much. That number, not a guess, is what should drive the repair.

Symptoms are hard to miss: fuel economy falls noticeably, the exhaust smells strongly of gasoline, black soot appears around the tailpipe, and often the engine runs rough at idle.

How it fails

  • A leaking or stuck-open fuel injector
  • A failed engine coolant temperature sensor telling the computer the engine is permanently cold
  • A contaminated mass airflow sensor over-reporting airflow
  • A failed oxygen sensor giving the computer bad feedback
  • A fuel pressure regulator stuck high, or a restricted return line
  • A severely clogged air filter, which is the cheapest possible cause

  • Note your actual fuel economy over two tanks rather than relying on impression
  • Look at the tailpipe interior — dry black soot is a rich signature

Questions people actually ask

Will running rich fail a California smog check?
Almost certainly. High hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide readings are exactly what a rich mixture produces, and the check engine light it usually triggers is an automatic failure on its own.
Can a dirty air filter really cause this?
Yes, and in this region it is worth checking every oil change. A filter loaded with fine desert dust restricts airflow enough to shift the mixture, and it is the least expensive item on the entire diagnostic list.
How bad is it for the engine?
Excess fuel washes the oil film off the cylinder walls and dilutes the oil in the crankcase, which accelerates wear on rings and bearings. Combined with the damage to the catalytic converter, this is not a fault to live with for months.
