Possible causes
Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.
Solid versus flashing
- Solid light: the car detected a fault outside its normal parameters. Drive gently and get it read within a few days.
- Flashing light: an active misfire is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter in minutes. Reduce speed and stop driving as soon as it is safe.
- Light plus overheating, oil pressure or charging warnings: pull over. Those are not advisory.
What the code actually tells you
A code names a circuit or a condition, not a broken part. P0420, for example, means the catalyst system is below its efficiency threshold. That can be a failing catalytic converter, but it can just as easily be a lazy oxygen sensor or an exhaust leak upstream fooling the sensor.
This is where a lot of money gets wasted. A parts store reads the code for free, sells you the part named in the description, and the light comes back because nobody tested anything.
What you can check
Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.
The cheap things to rule out first
- A loose or cracked gas cap, which triggers an evaporative emissions code.
- A recently disconnected battery, which can set readiness codes.
- A vacuum hose knocked loose during other service.
- A cheap aftermarket oxygen sensor installed at a previous repair.
What a shop should check
Ask for these before you approve any work. A shop that cannot answer them is guessing with your money.

- What codes are stored, including pending and history codes?
- What did the freeze frame data show about the conditions when the code set?
- What test did you run to confirm the part is bad, rather than the circuit reporting it?
- If this does not fix it, how does the diagnostic fee apply to the next step?
What to tell the mechanic
Read this out or text it over. Describing the pattern instead of naming a part is what keeps a diagnosis honest.

Stop driving and get professional help if any of these are true
- The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or you see steam or coolant on the ground.
- You smell burning, fuel, or hot oil, or you see smoke from anywhere on the car.
- The brake pedal sinks toward the floor, feels spongy, or the car pulls hard while braking.
- The steering feels loose, wanders, or the car does not track straight.
- A warning light flashes rather than staying steady, or the oil pressure or brake light comes on.
- The car loses power, stalls in traffic, or the battery light comes on while driving.

Smog check implications in California
An illuminated check engine light is an automatic smog check failure in California, regardless of what the code is. Clearing the code right before a test does not help either, because the monitors need a drive cycle to reset and a car with incomplete monitors will not pass.
If your registration renewal is coming up, deal with the light early rather than the week it is due.
