Wheel balance and tire imbalance
A wheel that is heavier on one side shakes in a narrow speed band, usually somewhere between 55 and 70 mph.

What this actually is
A tire and wheel assembly spins around 800 times per minute at freeway speed. If one point of that assembly is even a half ounce heavier than the rest, it throws a rhythmic force that you feel as a shake. The speed at which it appears is set by how fast that imbalance matches the natural frequency of the suspension — which is why the vibration shows up in a band and often fades again if you go faster.
Where you feel it tells you which end. A shake in the steering wheel is usually the front wheels. A shake felt in the seat and floor is usually the rear.
Balance weights fall off. Potholes on Sierra Avenue and the seams on the I-15 knock them loose regularly, and a wheel that was perfect at the last tire rotation can be out by the next one.

Fix it when convenient
An imbalance is a comfort problem first, but it wears tires, shocks and bearings prematurely. If the shake appeared suddenly rather than gradually, have it looked at promptly — sudden onset can mean tire separation, which is a different and far more serious problem.

- A wheel weight thrown off by a pothole or curb, leaving a known imbalance behind
- Mud, ice or accumulated brake dust build-up inside the wheel barrel
- A tire mounted with the heavy spot misaligned to the wheel's light spot
- Wheel damage — a bent rim from a pothole cannot be corrected by weight alone
- Uneven tire wear creating an imbalance that will return after any balance job

- Note the exact speed range where it appears and whether it fades above that
- Note whether you feel it in the wheel (front) or the seat (rear)
- Look at the inner rim lip for missing adhesive weights or clip marks with no weight
- Check whether it started right after tire work — if so, go back to that shop first
The tests that actually prove it
Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.
- A road-force balance, which loads the tire against a roller and finds problems a spin balancer cannot
- Runout measured on both the tire and the wheel, so a bent rim is not balanced around
- A check that the wheels are seated flat on clean hubs, since rust on the hub face imitates imbalance
- A road test after the work, at the speed where you actually feel it

Questions people actually ask
- Why does the shake go away above 70 mph?
- Because the imbalance excites the suspension at a specific frequency. Past that speed the excitation no longer matches, so the car smooths out even though the imbalance is still there.
- Should I balance after every rotation?
- It is good practice and usually inexpensive. At minimum, balance any time a tire is dismounted, any time you hit something hard, or any time a vibration appears.
- What is road-force balancing?
- A machine that presses a loaded roller against the spinning tire, simulating the weight of the car. It finds stiff spots in the tire's construction that a free-spinning balancer cannot see, which is why it solves vibrations that regular balancing keeps missing.
