Most shakes are wheels, tires or balance, but a shake that worsens quickly can be a failing hub or a separating tire. Get it looked at before a long drive.

Possible causes
Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.
Narrow it down by when it happens
- Only between about 55 and 70 mph, felt in the steering wheel: front wheel balance, most likely.
- Same speed range but felt in the seat: rear wheel balance or a driveshaft issue.
- Only while braking: rotor thickness variation, not a tire problem.
- Only under acceleration: a CV axle, motor mount or driveline angle.
- At idle, smooths out when driving: engine misfire or a collapsed motor mount.
- Worsening steadily with a wobble at low speed: a bent wheel, a separated tire belt or a bad hub bearing. Get this inspected quickly.
What it usually is
For most freeway commuters, it is tires. Wheel weights fall off, a pothole knocks a wheel out of true, or a tire develops a belt separation that no amount of balancing will cure. Inland Empire road surfaces and construction zones do their share of this.
Heat matters too. Tires that live at 110-degree pavement temperatures age faster than their tread depth suggests, so a tire that looks fine can still be the cause.
Walking through the likely causes
Wheel balance is the first and cheapest answer. A weight thrown off a rim, or a wheel that was only spin balanced rather than road force balanced, produces a shake that appears in a narrow speed band, usually somewhere between 55 and 70 miles per hour, and fades above and below it. If the shake tracks speed and ignores what your right foot and the brake pedal are doing, start here.
A damaged tire is next. A separated belt or a bulge from a pothole makes the tire out of round, and no amount of balancing corrects a tire whose carcass has moved. On desert and freeway commutes, heat and age do this to tires that still look fine on the tread. A bent wheel behaves the same way and is worth checking whenever a shake starts right after an impact.
Uneven tire wear — cupping, feathering or flat-spotting — puts a vibration in at lower speeds and often comes with noise. That pattern is telling you something else is wrong: an alignment out of spec, or dampers that stopped controlling the tire against the road.
If the shake shows up only when you brake, it is not tires. It is rotor thickness variation, and it arrives through the pedal and the steering wheel together as you slow down. If it shows up only when you accelerate, look at the driveline: a worn CV joint, a bad inner joint, or on a rear-drive vehicle a driveshaft U-joint or carrier bearing.
A wheel bearing adds a growl or hum that changes as you steer left and right, because steering shifts load between the two sides. And a shake that is worst at idle and disappears once you are moving is engine-side — a misfire or collapsed motor mount — not a wheel problem at all.
What it probably isn't
Useful exclusions, so you are not talked into the expensive answer first.
What it rarely is
It is rarely an alignment problem on its own. Alignment causes pulling and uneven wear, not vibration. If a shop sells you an alignment for a shake, ask what they found that connects the two.
What you can check
Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.
- Write down exactly when it happens: cold or warm, idling or moving, speed, and whether braking or turning changes it.
- Check tire pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb, on all four tires.
- With the engine off and cool, look at the oil and coolant levels using the dipstick and the reservoir markings only.
- Look under the car for fresh drips and note the color and where the puddle sits.
- Look at the battery terminals for corrosion or a loose clamp — no tools needed to spot it.
- Take a photo or a short video of the part, the puddle, the warning light or the estimate and send it through Photo Check.

Ask for these before you approve any work. A shop that cannot answer them is guessing with your money.

Ranges, not quotes. The good news on vibration is that the first two things to check are also the two cheapest.
- Four-wheel balance: roughly $50 to $120, or roughly $80 to $160 with road force measurement.
- One replacement tire, mounted and balanced: roughly $130 to $350 for common sizes, higher for truck and performance fitments.
- Four-wheel alignment: roughly $100 to $180.
- Wheel straightening or replacement: roughly $100 to $200 to repair a bent steel or alloy rim, and roughly $200 to $700-plus to replace an alloy wheel.
- Front rotors and pads, one axle: roughly $300 to $700 when the shake only appears under braking.

Safe to keep driving?
A mild balance vibration is annoying rather than dangerous. A wobble that gets worse as you slow down, a clunk with the shake, or a vibration that appeared suddenly after hitting something is worth an immediate inspection, because separated tires and failing bearings do not give much warning before they let go.

- That is rotor thickness variation, not a wheel-balance issue. Balancing or new tires will not change it. Ask the shop to measure the rotors and show you the numbers before agreeing to replace them.
- Can bad alignment cause shaking?
- Not directly, but alignment that is out of spec wears the tires unevenly, and uneven tires shake. That is why fixing the alignment at the same time as the tires keeps you from buying rubber twice.
