Wheel bearing or CV joint

A hum or grind that changes with speed or steering, and gets louder every month you leave it.

What this actually is

These two get confused constantly because both live at the corner of the car and both make noise. The distinction is in what changes the noise. A wheel bearing hums and the pitch rises with road speed, and it usually gets louder or quieter when you sway the car gently side to side at 40 mph because you are loading and unloading that bearing. A CV joint clicks rhythmically, and it does it while turning — classically at low speed with the wheel at full lock.

A wheel bearing supports the weight of the car and lets the hub spin. A CV joint transmits engine power to the wheel while allowing that wheel to steer and travel over bumps. Both wear out; neither fails without warning if you listen.

The rubber CV boot is the real story on most cars. It splits, grease flings out, dirt gets in, and the joint that would have lasted the life of the car is finished within a year.

A humming bearing has weeks to months, not years — but a badly worn bearing can seize, and a seized front bearing at speed is a genuine emergency. A clicking CV joint gives more warning, though a failed one can leave you unable to drive.

  • Wheel bearing raceways pitting from age, water intrusion or a hard impact
  • A hub bearing that was installed without proper torque, which fails early
  • A torn CV boot letting grease out and grit in, destroying the joint
  • An inner CV joint wearing, which vibrates under acceleration rather than clicking in turns
  • Damage after wheel work, from a hub not seated cleanly or a bearing struck during installation

  • At about 40 mph on an empty road, gently weave side to side — a bearing noise that changes with the sway names its corner
  • In an empty lot, turn full lock and drive slowly in a circle both directions; rhythmic clicking is a CV joint
  • Look behind the front wheels for a split rubber boot and grease sprayed around the inside of the wheel
  • Grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock on a lift or jack stand and rock it — play can mean a bearing

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • A road test with the technician, so they hear what you hear
  • A chassis-ear or stethoscope test that names the corner instead of guessing
  • A play and roughness check with the wheel off the ground, spinning the hub by hand
  • A boot inspection on both axles, since a torn boot found early is a far cheaper repair

Questions people actually ask

Is it safe to drive with a noisy wheel bearing?
For short local trips while you get it scheduled, generally yes. Not for a freeway trip, and not once the noise becomes a grind or you feel play in the steering. A seized bearing can lock a wheel.
Can a bad tire sound like a wheel bearing?
Absolutely, and it fools plenty of shops. A cupped or feathered tire produces a very similar hum. The cheap test is to rotate the tires and see whether the noise moves with them.
Should I just replace the whole axle instead of the boot?
If the boot has been torn for a while, yes — the joint has already ingested grit. If you caught it within days and the grease is clean, a boot is a legitimate and much cheaper repair.
