Clunks and knocks over bumps

Some suspension noises are cosmetic. A few of them are the parts that hold your wheel on.

Suspension noise is easy to live with and easy to overspend on. The goal is to separate the worn-but-fine bushings from the joints that are genuinely a safety concern.

Possible causes

Ordered from what we see most often to what we see least. Each one lists why it happens, the clues that point at it, and how serious it tends to be.

Sort the noise

  • Light rattle or knock over small bumps, worst at low speed: sway bar links or end bushings. Common, inexpensive, not a safety emergency.
  • Heavy clunk over larger bumps: struts, strut mounts or control arm bushings.
  • Creaking or groaning when turning slowly or going over driveways: dry bushings or a failing strut mount bearing.
  • Clicking while turning at low speed: a CV joint on a front-wheel-drive car.
  • Popping with play in the wheel when rocked by hand: ball joint or tie rod end. This one is a safety item.
  • Humming or growling that changes with steering input: a wheel bearing.

Walking through the likely causes

Sway bar end links are the most common answer and the cheapest. They are small rods with ball sockets on each end, and once the sockets develop play they knock over every seam and expansion joint, loudest at parking-lot speed. Annoying, but they are not holding the wheel on.

Control arm and subframe bushings are next. These are rubber pucks that isolate the suspension from the body, and heat plus UV turns the rubber hard until it cracks and separates. The noise is a heavier, duller clunk over bigger bumps, sometimes with a shudder felt through the floor under braking.

Strut mounts and the bearing plate inside them are the cause behind creaking and popping while turning the wheel at low speed, especially pulling out of a driveway. The struts themselves fade rather than fail, so most drivers never notice how much body motion they have lost until a new set goes in.

Ball joints and tie rod ends are the safety category. A joint with visible play lets the wheel change direction on its own, and in the worst case separates. A shop should be able to show you the movement with a pry bar while the wheel is off the ground, and if they can show it, the recommendation is not an upsell.

Wheel bearings and CV joints round out the list. A bearing hums or growls and changes pitch as you steer, loading one side more than the other. A CV joint clicks in a steady rhythm during a tight low-speed turn, and a torn CV boot slinging grease on the inside of the wheel is the early warning you can see for free.

What you can check

Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.

  • Write down exactly when it happens: cold or warm, idling or moving, speed, and whether braking or turning changes it.
  • Check tire pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb, on all four tires.
  • With the engine off and cool, look at the oil and coolant levels using the dipstick and the reservoir markings only.
  • Look under the car for fresh drips and note the color and where the puddle sits.
  • Look at the battery terminals for corrosion or a loose clamp — no tools needed to spot it.

Read this out or text it over. Describing the pattern instead of naming a part is what keeps a diagnosis honest.

When to stop driving

Stop driving and get professional help if any of these are true

  • The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or you see steam or coolant on the ground.
  • You smell burning, fuel, or hot oil, or you see smoke from anywhere on the car.
  • The brake pedal sinks toward the floor, feels spongy, or the car pulls hard while braking.
  • The steering feels loose, wanders, or the car does not track straight.
  • A warning light flashes rather than staying steady, or the oil pressure or brake light comes on.
  • The car loses power, stalls in traffic, or the battery light comes on while driving.

Which of these are safety items

Ball joints, tie rod ends and severely worn wheel bearings can fail in ways that lose control of the wheel. If a shop shows you play in one of those, that is not an upsell, it is the reason for the inspection.

Sway bar links, bushings and strut mounts are comfort and handling items. They are worth fixing, but you can plan them rather than panic about them.

Partly. With the car parked, push down hard on each corner and listen, then look behind each wheel for torn rubber boots and greasy splatter. Anything that requires rocking a wheel by hand or prying on a joint needs a lift, and that is what a paid inspection buys you.
How long can worn struts wait?
Faded struts are a handling and tire-wear issue rather than an immediate hazard, so they can usually wait months. If the tires are cupping or the car keeps bouncing after a bump, you are past the point where waiting is free.
