Brake fluid, air or master cylinder

The hydraulic side of the brakes: old fluid that boils on grades, air in the lines, or a master cylinder bypassing internally.

What this actually is

Brakes work because liquid does not compress. Push the pedal, the master cylinder pressurizes the fluid, and the calipers clamp. Anything compressible in that circuit — air, or vapor from boiling fluid — gives you a pedal that travels further and feels soft, because part of your effort is spent squeezing a bubble instead of the pads.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air over time. Fresh fluid boils around 450 degrees; fluid with three percent water can boil closer to 300. On a long descent from Wrightwood or down the Cajon Pass, brakes reach those temperatures easily, and that is when a car with neglected fluid suddenly has a pedal that goes to the floor.

A pedal that slowly sinks while you hold steady pressure at a red light, with no visible leak, is the specific signature of a master cylinder bypassing internally.

Stop driving / urgent

A soft or sinking pedal is a braking system telling you it is losing capacity. Do not drive a mountain grade, do not tow, and do not put it off. If the pedal goes near the floor, have it towed.

How it fails

  • Moisture-contaminated fluid boiling under heat, producing fade on grades
  • Air introduced during a repair and never properly bled out
  • A master cylinder seal bypassing internally, which makes the pedal sink under steady pressure
  • A leaking caliper, wheel cylinder or steel line, which loses fluid and pedal together
  • A flexible hose swelling under pressure, which softens the pedal at one corner
  • An ABS module fault that needs a scan-tool-controlled bleed to fully purge

What you can check yourself, free

None of this requires tools you do not already own, and all of it makes the shop conversation shorter.

  • Check the reservoir level and the fluid color — clear amber is healthy, dark brown is overdue
  • Pump the pedal a few times: if it firms up, air or a hydraulic fault is likely
  • Hold steady pressure at a stop for 30 seconds; a pedal that creeps toward the floor points at the master cylinder
  • Look for wet spots on the inside of each wheel and at the master cylinder behind the booster

The tests that actually prove it

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • A brake fluid moisture test with the percentage stated — this takes seconds and costs nothing
  • A pressure test or visual inspection of every wheel and line for leaks
  • A pedal-hold test performed by the technician to confirm or rule out internal bypass
  • A proper bleed procedure, including the ABS module where the manufacturer requires it

What to push back on

Questions people actually ask

Do worn brake pads make the pedal soft?
No. Worn pads make noise and lengthen stopping distance, but the pedal stays firm. A soft or sinking pedal is hydraulic — fluid, air, a leak, or the master cylinder.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Every two to three years for most vehicles, and sooner if the moisture test says so. If you regularly run grades or tow, treat two years as the outside limit.
Why did my brakes fade going down the mountain?
Sustained braking heats the fluid past its boiling point, and the vapor compresses where liquid would not. Downshift to let the engine hold the car, brake firmly in short applications rather than riding the pedal, and get the fluid flushed.
