Smoke from the exhaust: blue, white or black
Exhaust smoke is one of the few car symptoms with a built-in diagnostic: the color tells you what is being burned that should not be.

Quick answer
Every engine puts something out the tailpipe, and most of it is invisible. When it becomes visible, the color is a direct readout of what is going where it should not. Blue means oil is getting into the combustion chamber. White that lingers means coolant is. Black means the engine is burning more fuel than it can use. Those three point at three different systems with three very different price tags, so identifying the color correctly — in daylight, from a cold start and again warm — is the most useful thing you can do before anyone quotes you a repair.

What it usually is
Blue smoke on higher-mileage engines is most often valve stem seals. These small rubber seals harden with heat and age, letting oil seep past the valve stems while the engine sits. The classic signature is a puff of blue at startup or right after idling at a long light, clearing once you drive. It burns oil steadily enough that you notice the dipstick dropping between changes.
Blue smoke under acceleration, especially with oil consumption and a rough idle, points deeper — worn piston rings or cylinder wear. On turbocharged engines it can be a failing turbo seal, which is its own repair and worth identifying before an engine teardown is quoted.
Persistent white smoke with a sweet smell is coolant burning, and a head gasket is the usual verdict. The confirming tests are a cooling system pressure test, a combustion gas test on the coolant, and a cylinder leak-down test. Those tests exist precisely so nobody has to guess at a repair this expensive; ask for the results in writing.
Black smoke is a fuel-mixture problem and is usually the least expensive branch: a dirty air filter, a leaking fuel injector, a failing mass airflow or oxygen sensor, or a bad coolant temperature sensor telling the computer the engine is still cold. It normally comes with poor fuel economy and often a check engine light, and it will damage the catalytic converter if it runs long enough.
What it probably isn't
Useful exclusions, so you are not talked into the expensive answer first.
What it rarely is
It is rarely the catalytic converter, even though that is a common quote when a car smokes and fails smog. The converter is usually the victim of the real problem — burning oil or excess fuel destroys it. Replacing the converter without fixing what killed it means buying another one.
It is rarely fixed by high-mileage oil or additives. Thicker oil can slightly reduce blue smoke from worn seals, but it treats the symptom and can mask the rate of consumption.
White vapor on a cold morning is rarely anything. Condensation in the exhaust is normal and clears within a minute of driving. Do not let it be sold as a head gasket.
What you can check
Safe, no-tools-required checks. Never work under a car supported only by a jack, never open a hot cooling system, and leave anything involving brakes, fuel or airbags to a professional.
- Write down exactly when it happens: cold or warm, idling or moving, speed, and whether braking or turning changes it.
- Check tire pressures against the sticker in the driver's door jamb, on all four tires.
- With the engine off and cool, look at the oil and coolant levels using the dipstick and the reservoir markings only.
- Look under the car for fresh drips and note the color and where the puddle sits.
- Look at the battery terminals for corrosion or a loose clamp — no tools needed to spot it.
- Take a photo or a short video of the part, the puddle, the warning light or the estimate and send it through Photo Check.

What the fix typically runs
The black-smoke branch is the affordable one: an air filter is trivial, and a sensor or a single injector is a modest repair that often pays for itself in fuel economy. Get the codes read and the fuel trims looked at before parts are thrown at it.
Valve stem seals sit in the mid-to-high range because of the labor to reach them, though on some engines they can be done with the head in place. Piston rings mean an engine teardown and belong in the same conversation as replacing the engine — at that point compare the repair against the car's actual value, which is exactly the math a Car Dog will run with you for free.
Head gaskets are the expensive middle: significant labor, and the head usually needs machining. Before approving one, insist on the combustion gas test result. This is the single most common repair where a second opinion changes the outcome, because the diagnosis is expensive to be wrong about.

- The temperature gauge climbs into the red, or you see steam or coolant on the ground.
- You smell burning, fuel, or hot oil, or you see smoke from anywhere on the car.
- The brake pedal sinks toward the floor, feels spongy, or the car pulls hard while braking.
- The steering feels loose, wanders, or the car does not track straight.
- A warning light flashes rather than staying steady, or the oil pressure or brake light comes on.
- The car loses power, stalls in traffic, or the battery light comes on while driving.
Is it safe to drive?
Blue smoke means the engine is consuming oil, so the practical risk is running the oil level low between changes. Check the dipstick weekly, keep it topped to the full mark, and get the cause diagnosed. Driving is generally okay while you plan the repair, as long as the level never drops low.
White smoke that persists warm, especially with coolant loss, an overheating gauge, or milky residue on the oil cap, is a stop-driving symptom. Running an engine that is pulling coolant into a cylinder can hydro-lock it or warp the head within a very short distance, turning a gasket job into an engine.
Black smoke is not immediately dangerous, but it wastes fuel, will fail a California smog check, and steadily poisons the catalytic converter. Get it diagnosed within days rather than months.

- With the engine off and cool, check the oil level and look at the underside of the oil filler cap for a milky, mayonnaise-like film, which suggests coolant mixing with oil.
- Check the coolant reservoir level and watch whether it drops over a week with no puddle on the ground.
- Smell it: sweet means coolant, sharp and fuel-like means a rich mixture, acrid and oily means oil.
