Oil burning past seals or rings

Hardened valve stem seals or worn rings let oil into the combustion chamber — blue smoke and a dropping dipstick.

What this actually is

Oil is supposed to stay on one side of the piston rings and outside the valve stems. When those seals wear, small amounts get into the combustion chamber and burn with the fuel. The result is blue-tinted smoke and an engine that consumes oil without leaking a drop onto the driveway.

The timing of the smoke identifies which is which. A puff of blue at cold start that clears within a minute is classic valve stem seals: oil seeped past the stems overnight and burned off on startup. Blue smoke under acceleration or continuously points at piston rings or cylinder wear, which is a much bigger repair.

Some consumption is normal. Many manufacturers consider up to a quart per 1,000 miles to be within specification, which surprises people. The honest test is to measure it rather than argue about it.

Burning oil will not strand you tomorrow, but running low on oil will destroy the engine. If your car consumes oil, check the level every other fuel stop without exception, and keep a quart in the trunk.

  • Valve stem seals hardening with heat and age, most common past 100,000 miles
  • Piston rings worn or carbon-stuck in their grooves, which some engine families are known for
  • Cylinder wall wear or scoring on high-mileage or overheated engines
  • A clogged PCV system pressurizing the crankcase and pushing oil past seals
  • Turbocharger seal failure on turbo engines, which smokes heavily under boost
  • Extended oil change intervals with the wrong viscosity, which accelerates all of the above

What you can check yourself, free

  • Note when the smoke appears: cold start only, under acceleration, or after long idling
  • Mark the dipstick level, note the mileage, and check again in 500 miles to measure real consumption
  • Check the PCV valve — a stuck one is cheap and causes exactly this
  • Check whether the oil is the viscosity the manufacturer specifies, which people often get wrong

Ask for these by name, and ask to see the results. A measurement is a diagnosis; a guess is a parts bill.

  • A documented oil consumption test: measured fill, sealed, driven a set distance, remeasured
  • A compression test and a leak-down test, which distinguishes rings from valves
  • PCV system function verified before anything expensive is quoted
  • A turbo inspection on turbocharged engines, including checking the intercooler piping for oil

Questions people actually ask

How much oil consumption is normal?
Many manufacturers publish a limit of about one quart per 1,000 miles, which most owners consider excessive but is technically within spec. Under a quart per 3,000 miles is unremarkable on a higher-mileage engine. Measure before you spend.
Is thicker oil a legitimate fix?
It is a management strategy, not a repair, and it carries real risk. Modern engines with variable valve timing depend on precise oil flow through narrow passages, and using a heavier grade than specified can cause its own failures. Consult the manual, not the internet.
Will burning oil fail a California smog check?
It can. Visible smoke is grounds for failure at a California smog station, and oil contamination poisons the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensors, which produces failing readings on their own.
